For 50 years, a single company has extracted millions in profits from one of Minnesota’s most important and ecologically vulnerable regions, the Pineland Sands. The 770-square-mile area in northern Minnesota is home to globally threatened jack pine forests and abundant streams and wetlands. It is also underlain by a critical, shallow and highly vulnerable drinking water aquifer.
In its wake, the company has left poisoned rivers and drinking water and clear-cut forests. The company reaping all this devastation isn’t another corporate mining consortium or transnational oil pipeline, but a sprawling potato harvesting and processing empire run by the R.D. Offutt Company (RDO), based in Fargo, North Dakota.

A trailhead and rest area in Backus suddenly became crowded Saturday, Jan. 23, when protesters gathered at one of the nearby pipeline staging sites for Enbridge Energy s Line 3 oil pipeline replacement project. There have been several protests in the Backus area since work began.

The Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach, producer of the Pageant of the Masters, raised nearly $300,000 at its first-ever virtual gala on Dec. 5.
More than 1,500 guests tuned in for the Simply ARTrageous Live the Legacy Virtual Gala, according to a press release. The event’s proceeds will help the Festival of Arts continue making the arts widely accessible through programming, career opportunities, workshops and scholarships.
“We are beyond humbled and grateful to everyone who made this event possible,” said David Perry, president of the Festival of Arts Board of Directors. “We thank the donors for showing their support during these challenging times and for helping to position the organization for a stronger re-opening in 2021.
