I-70 through Glenwood Canyon reopened Saturday morning, according to a joint announcement by Gov. Jared Polis office and the Colorado Department of Transportation.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS An ongoing assessment of the damage to Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon lays the path for what needs to be accomplished before the roadway can be reopened.
The current highway closure through Glenwood Canyon, which began back on July 29, will be partially lifted within days said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew.
Glenwood Canyon, a 12.5-mi. canyon in western Colorado, was closed on July 29 due to a severe mudslide in the Grizzly Creek burn scar area. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) highway maintenance personnel have been working to secure the roadway and protect life safety, but the combination of the fires from last summer and the extreme rain resulted in substantial damage to the roadway, necessitating a longer-term closure of the Interstate.
