Longest Hong Kong rail line put into service, attracting hundred enthusiasts

(Photo/ Li Zhihua) The 56 km long Tuen Ma line (TML), the longest railway line in the city, officially set off at 5:50 a.m. on Sunday. The full TML links the West Rail Line and Tuen Ma line phrase -1, serving 27 stations on the journey, including two newly opened stations: Sung Wong Toi Station and To Kwa Wan Station. The commencement of the new line brings passengers a more convenient and efficient commuting experience.

The government announced that the MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) will start the detailed planning and design of the Northern Link project in the New Territories. It includes construction of Kwu Tung (KTU) Station, and a 10.7-km-long railway link between the existing Kam Sheung Road Station of West Rail Line and KTU Station, with three intermediate stations at San Tin, Ngau Tam Mei and Au Tau. The entire line is expected to be completed by 2034.
With the Northern Link connecting the East Rail Line and the West Rail Line, a railway loop will be completed serving the New Territories and Kowloon, which can greatly improve the transport connectivity between the east and the west of the New Territories. For example, it currently takes more than one hour to drive from Yuen Long to Kwu Tung during peak hours; after opening the three stations on the Northern Link, it will only take 12 minutes for a railway journey from Kam Sheung Road to Kwu Tung in the future. Aurecon has been awarded a major design contract for a substantial extension of Hong Kong’s Mas Transit Railway Corporation (MTR Corporation) rail network.

The Ghana Railway Company Limited has reported on some unscrupulous persons that have been cutting section so their rail lines via the Angu- Manso network. Preliminary reports indicate that these persons cut the lines and removed some components including fish plates [a metal bar that is bolted to the ends of two rails to join them together in a track], for scraps.
This has resulted in a total of nineteen derailments on the main Western Rail Lines since November.
Over the past months, about four separate arrests have been made by state security on such persons. However, no prosecution has been made against them. It is alleged that one civil engineer of the company has been aiding and abetting this crime by the scrap dealers.
