State officials could nudge more people out of their homes and back into the workforce, the business groups say, if they revert to the pre-pandemic requirement that those who claim unemployment insurance benefits must show they are actively seeking work.

Statewide and regional business associations from across the Commonwealth, including the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, have launched the Massachusetts Business Coalition on Skills (MBCS). The new statewide coalition will advocate for policies that develop the skills of the Cape and Islands current and future workforce. The MBCS formed because there are two sides to the skills gap, and both can drag job and economic growth. On the employer side, it is difficult to find qualified talent. A 2019 survey by coalition member Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education (MBAE) found that 73% of Massachusetts employers find it “somewhat difficult” or “very difficult” to find people with the right skills to fill open positions.

Maybury grew up working on minibikes and motorcycles, mechanical skills that came in handy when he started Maybury Material Handling in 1976. But finding employees with mechanical or electrical experience for his business is proving more difficult, a challenge amplified during the coronavirus pandemic. “We’re always hiring. We’re continuously advertising. Our demand is growing,” Maybury said in a recent interview. He even has a sign in front of the business in East Longmeadow, advertising for employees. Currently, he has 93, but he can use more. They are recruiting for office staff, fabricators and installers, along with service technicians who can work independently in the field.
