Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Dorothy Burrow’s flood-damaged Westport home. Ardern met affected property owners George and Dorothy Burrows, whose Gladstone St home was inundated by floodwaters for the second time in three years. Dorothy Burrows cried as she hugged Ardern and showed her around her flood-damaged home. The water reached the tops of her kitchen bench only three years after Cyclone Fehi caused widespread damage. The Buller River reached its highest ever recorded level at 12.8m on July 17. The previous record was 11.8 set in 1970. Ardern said she wanted to see for herself what the immediate and longer term recovery needs were.

Acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi held a press conference after parts of the South Island were flooded and areas were evacuated.
A State of Emergency was declared in the Marlborough District on Saturday, with around 900 people evacuated from their homes as heavy rainfall caused significant flooding.
Residents in Renwick, Spring Creek, Tuamarina, and the Lower Wairau were given evacuation orders on Saturday.
Initially, Renwick residents were the lucky ones able to return to their homes on Sunday, but the Marlborough District Council has now given everyone the all-clear.

Ministers give update on Westport flood damage
Government ministers have arrived in flood-stricken Westport to see the damage to the region firsthand.
Acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi, Agriculture Minister and West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O Connor, joined by Buller District mayor Jamie Cleine, are currently carrying out a flyover of the area to assess the situation before evaluating the flood damage on the ground.
Speaking at this afternoon s press conference, Faafoi thanked the efforts of emergency groups including the Defence Force and police as they work around the clock to help residents.
