In 2003 American musician Alicia Keys cofounded Keep a Child Alive with Leigh Blake, an HIV/AIDS activist, with the goal of making urgently needed HIV medications accessible to children and families in Africa. The organization’s mission has since expanded to include other services, such as clinical care and psychosocial support as well as a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic. Keep a Child Alive now supports HIV/AIDS programs in several African countries and India. Most prominent among its fund-raising efforts is the annual Black Ball, a black-tie gala that includes live musical performances.
