Dr. Gertrude D. âTrudyâ Conway, professor emerita, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, at home surrounded by her loved ones after an extended illness. She was 70.
Trudy began her distinguished career teaching philosophy at Mount Saint Maryâs University in 1979, when she returned to the United States with her husband, Abdolreza (âHuschangâ) Banan, from Iran, where she and Dr. Banan taught at Shiraz University.
In addition to the decades she spent in the classroom, mentoring students and faculty alike, she found time to write several books, multiple scholarly articles, serve as associate dean of the college, begin the University Honors Program, and initiate a study abroad program that would become the model for the Mountâs foreign studies program today.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which features a collection that includes more than two million works of art spanning 5,000 years, now includes three Mary Louis Academy students’ artwork on display.
Seniors Mahalia Carbonell, Rebecca Jurgens, and Sabina Yuricic won Gold Key Awards in the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the United States.

As a result, their framed work now hangs alongside nearly 250 other works of art created by New York City teens.

Mary Beth Crafts, nee Mary Elizabeth Amend, was born Sept. 4, 1941, in New York City (Manhattan). Her parents were Edward R. and Kathryn Quinlan Amend of the Bronx.
At the age of 2, Mary Beth moved with her parents to Bayside (Queens) where she attended Sacred Heart Grammar School. Following her high school graduation from The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates, the family moved to Slingerlands, N.Y., a suburb of Albany. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree in history from the College of St. Rose in Albany, she was employed as a claims representative by the Social Security Administration, training first in the Albany District office, and then returning to Queens to work in the Flushing District Office. In 1968, she was promoted to a budget analyst position at Social Security Headquarters in Woodlawn, Md.
