The James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup The James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup was established in honor of a William & Mary student who served with distinction in the First World War and lost his life before he could return to graduate. The award recognizes the student who best exemplifies character, scholarship and leadership. The recipient of the 2021 Carr Memorial Cup is Abram Clear ’21. Clear will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics and anthropology and recently accepted an offer to pursue a fully-funded linguistics M.A. at University of Toronto. A 2021 Rhodes Scholarship finalist, Clear distinguished himself as a true academic and campus leader. His senior honors thesis focused on the dialect of his family, based in the Appalachian Mountains, specifically on vowel production and perception.

The school’s board of visitors voted on Friday to rename Taliaferro Hall, Tyler Hall, Morton Hall and Cary Field.       The new names will honor alumni who helped make education more diverse and accessible to marginalized groups.  “Today’s actions highlight the importance of acknowledging and commemorating the complete and complex history of an institution that represents this nation in full,” Rector John Littel said in a press release.

William & Mary officials say the building is likely the oldest structure still in existence in the U.S. that was dedicated to the education of Black children. Researchers Rediscover School For Free And Enslaved Black Children At William & Mary Details Published: 25 February 2021 The College of William & Mary has confirmed the historic identity of a small white building tucked away on campus. After more than a decade of research  including archaeological digs and analysis of the building’s wood framing  academics have determined it was the original Williamsburg Bray School. The institution specialized in teaching Christianity to more than 400 enslaved and free Black children from 1760 to 1774.
