WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After William & Mary administration said vaccination rates were too low earlier this week, the university will now require vaccines for all students, faculty and staff before the fall semester.
The school joins Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Wesleyan University in local schools requiring vaccination.
Earlier this week, William & Mary said 56% of students reported being vaccinated. While that number jumped to 77% in the past few days, the school is still moving ahead with vaccine requirement.

In a message to the W&M community, Rowe said, “With the staunch support of alumni, William & Mary is now in a stronger position to make progress on our most significant challenges: ensuring equity, financial sustainability, competitive success and community building for all sports programs.”

One year ago today, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. That same day, William & Mary President Katherine A. Rowe announced that in-person classes were suspended and that the university would move to remote modes of instruction.
“We are in wholly new territory and will learn as we go, together,” she said. “For many of us as individuals, there will be disappointments and frustrations. For some, there may be real sacrifices, unexpected challenges or burdens that are hard to see. So I ask that you hold close our core values of belonging and respect. … William & Mary is a resilient community. I have seen this firsthand, particularly in recent weeks. We take care of each other. I am confident that will be the case in the coming days and weeks.”
