(Courtesy Fred Collins) Classical-music devotees who’ve been missing the sound of live music and the camaraderie of intermissions can begin to breathe a sigh of relief as the pandemic, at least around these parts, begins to wind down. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has just announced that Symphony Hall will reopen Sept. 30 with celebrity violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter playing the new John Williams Violin Concerto No. 2 (if you can’t wait, you can attend the world premiere at Tanglewood, July 24). This summer, many plans are already in place for live concerts, mainly in the open or semi-open air. Some programs, such as all the concerts at the legendary Marlboro Music Festival, are already sold out. Here’s my list of the live events that I’m aware of so far, including some I’m especially happy to encourage you to attend. Keep on the lookout for others.

Not only did the company build a new outdoor stage but a full season now known as “Glimmerglass on the Grass” will be offered with all productions having no intermission and lasting only up to 90 minutes with performances scheduled at either 11 a.m. or 6 p.m. “We have re-imagined the Glimmerglass experience for the 2021 season,” said Francesca Zambello, the company’s artistic and general manager. While this move outdoors is primarily for our company, audience and community, it is in harmony with what people love about Glimmerglass innovative art and performances in a beautiful location.”

Glimmerglass Festival to Expand Capacity for 2021

Glimmerglass Festival to Expand Capacity for 2021 The Glimmerglass Festival, the summer opera and musical theater festival in Cooperstown, New York, has announced plans for the summer of 2021 in the wake of its 2020 season cancellation due to COVID-19.  They will be expanding its attendance limits thanks to new guidance from New York State regarding COVID-19 restrictions. Attendees are required to either have the COVID-19 vaccine or proof of a negative COVID-19 test 14 days before the Festival In addition, a mask will be required at all times except when eating. The Festival is also expanding with the addition of a brand new outdoor stage.  As most people know, the Festival usually showcases its performances in the historic and intimate 915-seat lakeside theater just north of the Village of Cooperstown.  The new custom built stage will be located on the Festival grounds.

The Hudson Valley is getting ready to rock.Bethel Woods Guitarist and vocalist Rhett Miller, a Texas native and Gardiner resident well-known for his band the Old 97’s, wondered during the last year if he would ever again perform for a live audience. “I didn’t know if musicians would ever be returning to stages,” Miller said. “There were times when it seemed like, I don’t know, it would all be this weird new thing all concerts would be this Zoom-based thing for the rest of my life.”
