Gadsden closes City Hall over COVID-19 concerns

Gadsden City Hall is closed effective immediately, according to a news release from city officials. The release said the closure was “an effort to continue to keep the public and our staff safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.” Gadsden joined Southside, which closed its City Hall earlier this week, and Attalla, which closed its facility last week. According to the release, the Gadsden closure “will be re-evaluated weekly as we carefully monitor the changing situation and modify our plans.” The facility was closed for a month during the early stages of the pandemic. Numbers published by Bama Tracker on Thursday indicated an increase of 117 verified and 23 probable COVID-19 cases in Etowah County, pushing the respective overall totals to 6,809 and 1,633. Two additional deaths were confirmed, making the county s toll 77 confirmed and five probable COVID-19 fatalities.

Jack Page, longtime legislator, dies at age 70

Former Alabama House of Representatives member John “Jack” Page III, who represented the Gadsden area for 17 years, died Monday in a local hospital, Alabama House Public Information Officer Clay Redden said Tuesday. Page was 70 and had been in poor health since surgery in June. He recently contracted the COVID-19 virus, said his former wife, Rebecca Gray Page. Page was a member of the Gadsden City Council when he was elected to the House in a special election in 1993 to succeed the late June Bugg. He was a Democrat and was reelected four times, but he lost the 2010 general election to Republican Becky Nordgren of Gadsden.

Attalla City Hall closed temporarily as a precaution against COVID-19

Attalla Mayor Larry Means said no one at City Hall has gotten sick through the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with rising cases in the county, the decision was made to close the building to the public for the time being. Means said there s been a slowdown in traffic at City Hall because of the threat of COVID-19, he supposes. The people coming in were mainly paying fines or getting permits, he said. City Hall closed for a while earlier in the pandemic, Means said, and it seemed to help people stay healthy. He said that s the goal with this shutdown, too.
