Fairbanks school district: No more masks for K-12 public education workers and students 16 and older

The Fairbanks school district announced Thursday that people age 16 and older no longer need to wear face masks or social distance at schools and at district events. The announcement comes after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relaxed public health guidance for vaccinated people on Thursday. Additionally, the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the University of Alaska Fairbanks are working on updating their rules around Covid-19, and the city of Fairbanks is looking at lifting the mask requirement for vaccinated city employees, according to a spokeswoman. The school district put out an announcement loosening its Covid-19 protocols within hours of the CDC announcement.

FNSB has sharp spike in Covid-19 cases

Fairbanks North Star Borough saw a sharp spike in new Covid-19 cases this week while the state upward trend slowed. “We’ve seen some outrageous numbers,” said Fairbanks borough Chief of Staff Jim Williams. “They were outrageous in a sense that on Wednesday we saw over a hundred new cases — our third highest number.” On Thursday, only 32 new people contracted the virus across the borough and on Wednesday Fairbanks was leading the state in new cases, according to reports from the Department of Health and Social Services. The city reported 70 new cases on Wednesday while North Pole reported 34, and two more were registered somewhere else in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. With more than 27 cases per 100,000 people in the borough, only Mat-Su is doing worse.

New Carlson Center vision OK d in narrow vote | News Miner

The assembly approved a new business model for the Carlson Center, which would open as a community center as soon as this fall, depending on the borough’s operational status for Covid-19. Drop-in fees would be $4 for children and $6 for adults. The vote on Saturday to expand services at the Interior’s largest indoor arena was 5-4 with supporters looking to make the facility, which often sits idle even in normal times, more accessible and useful to residents. New offerings under the Carlson Center reboot include indoor sports, an indoor play area, movie nights, food truck rallies, birthday parties and craft classes.
