Walsh s departure date remains unclear
Pressure is mounting on the Boston City Council to set aside a special election that would be triggered by the city charter if Mayor Walsh vacates his seat before March 5, a scenario that appears likely as Biden cabinet nominations are moving through US Senate confirmation hearings at a quick pace.
On Tuesday, a Home Rule Petition that would override the requirement for a special election was largely embraced by councillors and citizens who logged on to testify during a virtual hearing of the council’s Committee on Government Operations. The panel’s chair, District 1 Councillor Lydia Edwards, confirmed that there will be a vote on the petition during next week’s (Feb. 3) regular meeting, following a working session scheduled for this Friday at 2 p.m.

GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS. TGIF!
POLLACK S NEW LANE President Joe Biden is filling his new administration with Massachusetts officials and experts, and leaving some big job openings here in the process.
As Gov. Charlie Baker put it yesterday, he s said goodbye to quite a few colleagues in the last several weeks the mayor of Boston, the governor of Rhode Island, two members of his medical advisory board, and now, one of his best-known cabinet secretaries.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley supports the push to skip a special election for a successor to Mayor Walsh, President Biden’s Secretary of Labor-designate, and stick with regularly scheduled elections later this year.
“I think Lawrence has given us a great model to replicate,” said Pressley in an interview with the Reporter on Thursday, referring to that city’s petition to the Legislature to override a special election to replace Mayor Dan Rivera, who resigned this month to take a new role as president and CEO of Mass Development. “They did that recognizing that it’s often a way of disenfranchising many voters. I certainly ran a campaign that was committed to and successful in expanding the electorate.”

Boston will be able to skip special elections and proceed directly to September s non-partisan primary and November s final contest, officials on Beacon Hill and at City Hall have told GBH News.
Gov. Charlie Baker, who has the final word, said Thursday that he would most likely approve that plan.
“They clearly will show deference to the voters of Boston in this case, I believe,” Secretary of State Bill Galvin said earlier this week.
