ELY – The Ely Police Department will operate for the rest of this year, and perhaps longer, with just two primary squad cars due to a blown engine in their third vehicle, a situation which could affect the department’s overall response capabilities.
The EPD responded to 2,347 incidents in 2020, about two dozen more calls than in 2019, according to Police Chief Chad Houde, so the number of incidents/calls for 2020 is about typical. However, having one less squad car for at least a year could be a challenge for the overall response efficiency of the department, Chief Houde told city council members Tuesday night.

ELY - A sparse agenda for the city council here this week found council members in the middle of a dispute between neighbors over lawn mowing. One neighbor wants to mow the lawn on portions of city property surrounding his property on Sibley Drive. The other neighbor doesn’t want him to.
Apparently, Andy Hill, of 2111 Sibley Drive, has been doing the extra lawn mowing outside his property limits for the past two summers, but the Ely City Police were recently notified of the random act of beautification and Hill was told by the local lawn mowing police that he would have to get permission from city leaders to continue the kindness activity.

ELY – Several recommendations from the new ATV Trails and Ordinance Task Force for the city of Ely were approved by the city council here Tuesday night, giving the off-road vehicles more access to city streets.
The task force was formed last month to review and update city rules pertaining to off-road vehicle operation on city streets and to bring the city rules in compliance with county and state laws.
With a new recreational trailhead in the works on the west end of town, the task force’s main goal is to ensure that Ely is “ATV friendly while maintaining a high level of safety.”

IRON RANGE â Cities across the Iron Range are individually responding to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walzâs announcement last week that relaxed COVID-19 mask mandate guidelines. Overall, cities are working to open up and follow the new recommendations of state and federal health organizations.
The Virginia City Council addressed the matter during Tuesday morningâs Committee of the Whole meeting.
âThereâs been a lot of confusion. I received a lot of calls over the weekend,â said Mayor Larry Cuffe Jr. Since the beginning of the pandemic, âweâve always followed the governorâs guidelines.â
That will continue to be the case for the city, he said.
