Polar Plunge Fuels Dollar-Plus Gains for Northeast Weekly Natural Gas Prices

Polar Plunge Fuels Dollar-Plus Gains for Northeast Weekly Natural Gas Prices Buoyed by expectations for the lowest temperatures of the winter season so far, natural gas spot prices rocketed sharply higher during the first week of February. The Northeast’s reputation for extreme volatility was on full display as prices soared beyond $15.000 in some locations. NGI Weekly Spot Gas National Avg. surged 47.5 cents to $3.570. The National Weather Service (NWS) said the low pressure system tracking toward the East Coast could lead to snow from the southern Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic. There is still some uncertainty as to the storm’s exact track and location, but the latest forecast calls for snow, falling heavily at times, from the Washington, DC/Baltimore metro areas up the I-95 corridor to southern New England on Sunday.

Inside the battery in 3D: Powerful X-rays watch solid state batteries charging and discharging

X-rays have proven to be a powerful tool for peering inside of these batteries to see the changes that occur in real time. Using the ultrabright X-rays of the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility at the DOE s Argonne National Laboratory, a research team recently observed the internal evolution of the materials inside solid-state lithium batteries as they were charged and discharged. This detailed 3D information may help improve the reliability and performance of the batteries, which use solid materials to replace the flammable liquid electrolytes i

Charge and Discharge of Solid-State Batteries

Scientists have used X-ray tomography to observe how the materials within solid-state lithium batteries evolve internally, as these batteries are charged and discharged simultaneously. In-depth 3D data from the study could help enhance the performance and reliability of the batteries, which utilize solid materials to substitute the flammable liquid electrolytes in currently available lithium-ion batteries. The novel operando synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography imaging showed how the behavior of solid-state batteries is determined by the dynamic variations of electrode materials at the interfaces of lithium and solid electrolytes.

Detailed three-dimensional information from the research could help improve the reliability and performance of the batteries, which use solid materials to replace the flammable liquid electrolytes in existing lithium-ion batteries. The operando synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography imaging revealed how the dynamic changes of electrode materials at lithium/solid-electrolyte interfaces determine the behavior of solid-state batteries. The researchers found that battery operation caused voids to form at the interface, which created a loss of c
