One of Napier s most prominent buildings to succumb to the February 3, 1931, Hawke s Bay earthquake was the Masonic Hotel.
The photo shows sailors doing body recoveries at the Masonic Hotel.
One of the employees of the hotel, a barman, David Evans, died trying to escape the building.
A family story is told that his sister-in-law Gert Begley went with his son, Noel, about three days after the earthquake to try and find him. Sailors helped and located his body under the rubble.

Landmark Napier hotel the Art Deco Masonic still gets regular requests from guests wanting to sleep in the room in which the Queen and Prince Philip slept more than 67 years ago.
It was on the night of January 6-7, 1954, a popular photograph showing them waving to the crowd from the first floor.

It predated the newspaper, the fire station, and even the first brewery.
On this day 150 years ago, the seeds were planted for Tauranga Library by three men at the Masonic Hotel who wanted to provide reading material to locals.
There were less than 250 households at the time, road transport was powered by horse or donkey, and the few roads that weren t dirt were made of pipi shell.
