It s already been a week since dining at eateries is prohibited, and since then, all we ve been asking ourselves is this: where shall we takeaway from?
Since Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) was announced on Friday (May 14), our local F&B establishments have scrambled to get ready for yet another round of takeaways and deliveries. Some have even taken to social media to share special promotions for diners who self-collect their food in hopes of encouraging people to patronise their eateries.
However, a number of elderly F&B owners are at a bigger disadvantage than others due to their lack of experience with technology. With less footfall in hawker centres and their inability to market themselves online, they are at risk of having to shutter for good.

Troops in the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways Council (GSNYPENN) sold 1,260,493 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies during the 2021 season, roughly 88 percent to the projected fundraising goal of 1.4 million boxes. The program ran December 19 through March 28.

Given how price-sensitive Singapore consumers can be (especially when it comes to hawker food), hawkers are unwilling to increase prices despite their increasingly thin profit margins due to a combination of rising food cost and salaries for workers. Thus, resulting in affordable – some might even say ‘cheap’ – meal options typically ranging between S$3 to S$7. Of course, these costs vary based on food items. For instance, chicken rice will typically be pricier than a meatless meal, like chwee kueh (water rice cakes).
Thus, for fair comparison’s sake, the cost of 3 everyday hawker dishes that can also be found in restaurants or prepared at home have been averaged. Of the 3 meals, nasi lemak turned out the most expensive, presumably because of the number of ingredients it contains.
