The newest ethics complaint alleges Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales’ mayoral campaign forged voter signatures on paperwork submitted to the City Clerk to demonstrate the sheriff had sufficient citizen support to get public financing. Gonzales’ campaign, meanwhile, says the complaint is a “desperate” attempt to overblow “innocent administrative mistakes made by volunteers.” ...................... To qualify for a taxpayer-funded campaign, mayoral candidates must collect $5 contributions from at least 1% of registered city voters – 3,779 people. Contributions collected in person require the voter to sign their name in a receipt book that is subsequently turned into the City Clerk.
