NORFOLK, Va. â 2021 marks 50 years of a big basketball tradition. The MEAC tournament is typically a big deal for business in Norfolk, but in a time thatâs been anything but, the sporting event has almost gone unnoticed among some fans.
âHad no idea MEAC was going on this weekend,â said Kejdra Williams of Chesapeake.
Her friend, Maya Bivens of Norfolk, agreed.
âUsually, it would be on the radio, seen on the buses,â Bivens said.
âBillboards, everything,â added Williams. I havenât seen one thing about MEAC at all.â
The event has been an economic driver for Downtown Norfolk, with fans and out-of-towners flocking to sporting bars and filling up hotels near the Scope Arena. The COVID-19 crisis, however, has forced the MEAC tournament organizers to scale down the event.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina A&T has pulled out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament and ended its season amid a positive COVID-19 test within the program.
The school and league announced the move Thursday, a day before the Aggies were due to play as the No. 1 seed from the league’s Southern Division. North Carolina A&T was pursuing its first NCAA bid since 2013.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina State opened the spring season Saturday with a heavy heart.
The Bulldogsâ starting quarterback, Corey Fields, buried his brother Friday. His brother died in an ATV accident several days before that, according to head coach Buddy Pough.
âHeâs a real manâs man when you talk about Corey Fields,â said Pough.
Fields opted to remain with the team every day after his brother died to prepare for the opener at home against Alabama A&M. He did so to honor his brother and lead the team.
