A cadre of local Black-owned businesses has teamed up to create exclusive food products and fashion merch for purchase via Doordash at a contactless pop-up drive-in movie event on March 26, 27 and 28 at Hollywood Park. In the mix are Blondie Beach Records, Neighbors Skate Shop, streetwear labels the Hundreds, Carrots by Anwar Carrots, Wckdthghts, Bricks & Wood and Total Luxury Spa; food brands Jah Mamah Sauce and Harun Coffee; and restaurants Simply Wholesome, Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen, Ackee Bamboo, Hotville Chicken and the Serving Spoon, a favorite of Zendaya. The goods, including hoodies and hats, from $35 to $100, will be delivered carhop-style from 6 p.m. to midnight during the premiere of “North Hollywood” by Mikey Alfred, owner of skate brand and movie studio Illegal Civ, followed by a screening of “Jurassic Park.” For a chance to win free kicks from Foot Locker, order pickup food from partnering restaurants through March 20. As the majority of brands, big or small, are recognizing the need to adopt eco-friendly practices, there is a new player entering the low-impact fashion space.
This time around, in honour of Black History Month, South Los Angeles music resource The World Stage is the focus of the event. First opening its doors in 1989, the space that has had an immeasurable impact on the area’s local community, and helped shape its cultural landscape. “We believe, especially during this time of uncertainty, that the nurturing and healing powers of music and its inherent spaces must be preserved and protected,” TLS explain.
With Sun Ra Arkestra’s 90-minute performance set to be followed by a conversation hosted by industry veteran and manager Chace Infinite with members of Sun Ra, Aman Kufahamu, and Kamau Daáood, there’s also a selection of merch to get your hands on (without the usual queue for the merch stand? All the better). Made up of long-sleeved tees, tote bags, and posters, each piece bears Total Luxury Spa’s trippy take on Sun Ra’s own visuals.
