Hallowell-area school looking to use athletics fund money to put in a new track When he died, Hallowell resident Melvin Simmons left a financial gift intended to pay for improvements at Hall-Dale High School athletic facilities. Share HALLOWELL Safety concerns about the track at Hall-Dale High School had Simmons Fund committee members discussing its replacement at their meeting Tuesday night. The track is the committee’s main focus, but it is still in the planning process. Hall-Dale Principal Mark Tinkham said the project could take 12-16 months from the time an architect looks at the field, to the time a final design and the track are put into place. The committee also discussed installing new LED lights, as well. ....

A new book by a respected Black food writer raises that question and names two North Carolina Black-owned barbecue joints as his favorites. âBlack Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecueâ by Adrian Miller suggests that the story of the American tradition of barbecue cannot be told without attention to great numbers of Black pit masters. He writes that âa general consensus emerged in the late 19th century that African American barbecuers made the best and most authentic barbecue.â Even racist whites, he says, loved Black-made barbecue. âDuring the reign of Black barbecuers, barbecue was largely represented in the media as hardy, messy, working-class food that was the delicious result of extensive, exhaustive, and specialized menial labor.
