The poured concrete floor of Tolarno Galleries is as black and viscous as an oil slick. Perfect to reflect the large-scale oil paintings of Ben Quilty, say, or the luscious photographs of Bill Henson; even the sculptural provocations of Patricia Piccinini take on added impact.
Early last year, though, the shiny surface was aâglisten with the eye-popping polychromatic geometries of straw marquetry covering a cabinet, a credenza and a console conjured up by industrial designer Adam Goodrum in tandem with Arthur Seigneur, one of the few straw marquetry artisans working anywhere in the world today â who just happens to be based in Melbourne.

Regarded as a leader in Melbourne’s Modern Architecture movement, Robin Boyd designed the house for his own family in 1957 on Walsh Street, a stone’s throw from Melbourne Gardens. Now the home of the Robin Boyd Foundation, the house, which is considered an exemplar of modernist Australian architecture, continues to influence architectural thinking.
