Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater to launch series of films centered around women’s stories Friday

ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Theater has partnered with Toyota to add a Diversity Film Series kicking off this month in its Virtual Movie Palace.
“Through film and storytelling, we hope to stimulate thoughtful and deeper conversations around race, gender, equity, inclusion, and social justice, among many other issues,” the Michigan Theater said in a release.
One way to engage with these issues is by holding post-film discussions with thought leaders and filmmakers in Washtenaw County and beyond.

Viewership ratings for the 78th Golden Globe Awards indicated a 60 percent decline in viewership compared to the ratings for 2020’s Golden Globes. Award show ratings have been steadily falling for years and the trend shows no signs of reversing, particularly as more film and television fans cut the cord in favor of streaming. There might’ve been a virtual red carpet on Sunday, but awards shows sell themselves on their ability to gather large groups of celebrities in-person and create a festive and star-studded atmosphere, two things that the coronavirus pandemic have effectively put on hold.

The 78th Golden Globe Awards are scheduled for Feb. 28 and will be shown on NBC. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will return to host the ceremony, which they last led in 2015. The Golden Globes typically take place in January. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, pushed the ceremony to February this year, citing the coronavirus pandemic. Streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon, dominated the list of nominees, both with their own films like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami,” which wouldn’t have relied on open movie theaters to find eyeballs even during a standard year and with movies that the streaming companies purchased from traditional studios, including Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” We’ll talk about actors, directors, and other Golden Globe nomination next week.
