Community Prevention Day kicks off Saturday, hosted by Metro Drug Coalition The Metro Drug Coalition will host several events at the Kroger off E. Saturday will not be like any average weekend for the Metro Drug Coalition they will work to save lives during a Community Prevention Day. The coalition will host several kinds of events at the Kroger Marketplace off East Emory Road in Powell, partnering with some community leaders. They will collect unwanted medications, distribute free naloxone, host a food drive and even teach people about current trends in youth substance abuse so they can identify signs a teen may need help.

After a record-breaking year of drug overdoses in Knox County, the top doctor at the University of Tennessee Medical Center said Thursday that disparities in addiction and treatment appear to be on the rise.  Within Knox County, we have a disparity within a disparity, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Keith Gray said. Speaking at the Metro Drug Coalition s annual East Tennessee Opioid Conference, he said African-Americans have experienced an increased rate of overdose deaths beyond the Knox County spike, calling it a significant increase over the past five years.

The Tennessee Attorney General called the number of opioid pills distributed by a West Knoxville Food City pharmacy eye-popping in an interview a day after the state sued the grocery chain for its pill distribution in the midst of the opioid epidemic.  In a 209 page lawsuit, Tennessee accuses the Food City in Bearden of filling enough prescriptions for addictive opioids to give 130 pills to every man, woman and child in Knoxville.
