Nashville children are continuing to get vaccinated before they go back to school, despite conflicting messages and disruption from the Tennessee Department of Health.
State health department officials issued a directive halting all child vaccination outreach efforts this week amid pressure from Republican state lawmakers and on Monday, fired the state s top vaccine official. Though the state claimed Thursday that there hasn t been any disruption in vaccine services, the majority of Tennessee counties rely on state direction. © Stephanie Amador / The Tennessean

Viviana Sandoval brought her son, Orlando Torres, 13, to the McMurray Middle School Friday. The middle schooler needed to receive the required TDAP (tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis) vaccine for seventh grade but he also opted in for the COVID-19 vaccine as well.
Torres, like most Metro Nashville students, spent most of the school year learning remotely. Once schools reopened, Torres was again sent home to quarantine after a classmate tested positive for COVID-19.
