Quibdó, a Colombian city gripped by urban violence and poverty

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A shootout last Sunday left several gunshot wounds in the intensive care ward of the main hospital in Quibdó, a Colombian city plagued by violence imposed by the ELN guerrillas, the Gulf Clan, and the local narco group “Fuerzas Armadas Mexicanas” (Mexican Armed Forces). Men with long-range weapons crossed the San Francisco de Asis hospital to reach the dock of the mighty Atrato river where a boat was waiting for them, facilitating their escape from another gang following them from the neighboring sector. Chocó is the only Colombian department to have coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. (Photo internet reproduction)

"Presidential plane still without a buyer" – Banobras – The Yucatan Times

By Yucatan Times on December 28, 2020 Share The plane’s sale process is the same as in December 2018, when Sedena informed Banobras that the TP01 would stop working for the Executive. MEXICO CITY (Milenio) – To date, there is no record of potential buyers or advance payments to set aside the TP01 José María Morelos y Pavón aircraft, worth 2.5 billion pesos, according to the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras). It has been almost two years since the aircraft was offered through the UN to everybody; it went and returned from Boeing’s hangars in California, and now it is kept in the custody of the Army in Military Base 19. According to the Mexican Armed Forces, that means an average expense of 8 million pesos (400,000 USD) per month in maintenance. Until this December, it has represented an expense for the federation of approximately

As Mexico's security deteriorates, the power of the military grows – The Washington Post. – The Yucatan Times

By Yucatan Times on December 24, 2020 Share Two years into López Obrador’s term, Mexico’s armed forces have assumed a broader role in the country’s affairs than at any point since the end of military-led government in the 1940s. MEXICO CITY (The Washington Post) – When faced with the highest levels of violence, Andrés Manuel López Obrador – a longtime critic of the U.S.-backed drug war who had promised to return the soldiers to their barracks – responded in the same way as his predecessors: he called in the military. After two years in office, Mexico’s armed forces have taken on a larger role in the country’s affairs than at any time since the end of military-led governments in the 1940s, The Washington Post reports in a wide-ranging feature signed by Mary Beth Sheridan.
