Dr Archer s still treading the boards | Canberra CityNews

What’s what and who’s who in the arts this week? Here’s HELEN MUSA‘s weekly “Arts in the City” column. FORMER director of the Centenary of Canberra and the National Festival of Australian Theatre, Robyn Archer, has just been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia. Performing regularly, Archer is now a global mentor for the European Festivals’ Association Festival Academy and an ambassador for the Adelaide Crows. Ian Darling, left, and Greg Fleet… “The Twins”, Courtyard Studio, May 3-6. “THE Twins”, a new Australian play, stars comedians Greg Fleet and Ian Darling playing two old school friends, Greg and Ian, reuniting 40 years after playing the twins in Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors”, to rework it as a two-hander. The show has been coined “theatre verité” because the characters are real people, played by themselves. The Courtyard Studio, May 3-6, book here.

Denison s Wilson honored for faith-centric, other area contributions

Denison student Margaret “Meg” Wilson, Class of 2021, is the 74th recipient of the Kussmaul Award. Since 1947, the Louis Kussmaul Friendship Award jointly presented by Denison University and the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce has been given annually to the Denison University student (traditionally a senior) who has contributed the most to building friendly relations between Denison and the Granville community. The award is a formal recognition of those who have given of themselves to the greater community during their Denison years. A $300 prize is awarded the winning nominee. Wilson, of Bexley, Ohio, received the award during a virtual Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting on April 21.

Guttered: a joyful immersion and subversion of expectations between the bowling lanes

Review: Guttered, directed by Michelle Ryan. Restless Dance Theatre for Adelaide Festival. We are greeted at the entrance of Kingpin Norwood. Seasoned bowlers make a beeline for shoe hire while teens flock to the clanging siren call of arcade games. The line between real and theatrical is joyfully blurred as the interactive and immersive performance of Guttered begins. Upon entering, we are required to show our palms for inspection as a small light dances across our hands. We are assessed: “You look like you’re good at supporting people. You can be on the cheer squad.” Picked for our respective teams, we are directed towards couches at the end of each lane or a row of chairs towards the back of the room. These opening moments conjure a sense of conversation between audience and dancers.
