Oak Park and Rancho Campana high schools were added to the 2021 California Distinguished Schools list announced Wednesday.
The list, originally put out by the state Department of Education in March with 102 schools, was updated with an additional 121 schools, including the two Ventura County schools.
The schools are named based on performance and progress on state indicators specified on the California School Dashboard, a statement from state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond says. The Distinguished Schools program is meant to recognize schools primarily for closing the achievement gap and/or achieving exceptional student performance.
Oak Park High, in the Oak Park Unified School District, and Rancho Campana High in Camarillo, part of Oxnard Union High School District, are the only schools from the county on the list this year.
“While at Chatsworth High, Mr. Gomez was also a Humanitas teacher and coordinator as well as Youth Crisis Intervention Coordinator, a football coach and a wrestling coach,” reads a statement issued by the district Friday.
Then, in 2006, Gomez became Dean of Students at Chatsworth High, a position he held until 2013 when he moved to Moorpark Unified School District. There, he served as an administrator overseeing many programs at Moorpark High, Moorpark Community Continuation High School and most recently Campus Canyon College Prep Academy.
Additionally, Gomez has also served as the District School Attendance Review Board Chairperson.
He has participated in many training programs including crisis and anti-bullying training, and has been a guest lecturer at Cal Lutheran University, Loyola Marymount University, National University and parent empowerment workshops.
Mr. Gomez began his career in education as an English teacher at Chatsworth High School in 2000.
