Virtual Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters Day in Alaska - From the Archdiocese - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

By Kristen Bruskas, Director of Development and Communications, Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco   The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco Greek Language and Culture Ministry sponsored a virtual event in celebration of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters Day on Saturday, January 30, 2021. The event was livestreamed from the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Anchorage, AK, with presentations from Greek School and Sunday School students from throughout the Metropolis. The program began with a picturesque video showing the beautiful scenery and topography of Alaska. Greek Language and Culture Ministry chair, Katerina Iconomou, welcomed the attendees to the event, including His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco. Other special guests included the Consul General of Greece in San Francisco Socrates Sourvinos, and the Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles Evgenia Beniatoglou.

Back to school amidst pandemic: a word of advice from Archbishop Makarios

Archbishop Makarios sends a special message to students, as they embark on a new school year in Australia. Wishing them “health and strength” to progress and fulfill their dreams, he encourages children to stand with courage and patience before the difficulties. Connecting with culture and community during the dark cold days of winter : Culture : Smile Politely

The pandemic has strained the cultural bonds that connect us to our people and traditions. As Darya Shahgheibi, program administrator of Uniting Pride, says, “Culture cannot be experienced in solitude.” While the coronavirus has severely restricted our ability to safely gather together, especially during the cold, gray days of winter, our common need for connection with people who share our values, tastes, and lived experiences has compelled many of us to rethink how we share culture and community, especially during times of solitude. Three Champaign-Urbana residents who identify with multiple cultures and communities shared how they’re safely connecting with the people and practices that bring them light and joy during the coldest and darkest months of the year.
