Seminar speakers put stress on transgender persons’ rights

MARDAN: Speakers at an awareness seminar on Monday demanded social acceptance and enacting effective legislation to curb violence and discrimination of the most neglected and vulnerable segments of society.
The Gynae-B unit of Mardan Medical Complex had organized the the day-long session titled “Seminar on Transgender Identities and their Health Problems in Pakistan” held in Haider Hall of Bacha Khan Medical College (BKMC).
Dean/CEO BKMC Prof Dr Muhammad Fazil, MD Prof Dr Mukhtiar Ali, In-charge Gynae-B ward Prof Dr Samina Jadoon, Prof Dr Mutasim Billah were present on the occasion.Programme Coordinator Blue Veins, a nonprofit social welfare organization working for the rights of transgender, Qamar Naseem, President Tans Action Alliance Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ms Fazana, Trans Rights Activists Namkin, Mahi and others attended the seminar.

MoU signed to promote quality medical research

MARDAN: The Bacha Khan Medical College (BKMC) on Friday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Khyber Medical University (KMU) to encourage and promote quality research to develop new medicines and procedures to help cure ailments.
KMU Vice-chancellor Dr Zia ul Haq and BKMC Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Fazil signed the MoU in a ceremony.
The vice-chancellor and the dean inaugurated KMU’s sub-office of Research, Innovation and Commercializtion (ORIC) at the BKMC.
The dean hoped that the BKMC would now serve as the regional hub for the Nowshera Medical College in Nowshera, Gajju Khan Medical College in Swabi and Saidu Sharif Medical College Swat for carrying out research and hosting training activities while the KMU would provide access to the faculty members of the BKMC to the varsity digital library and to software.
Dr Burki inspects healthcare services at MTI Mardan

MARDAN: The Policy Board Chairman Dr Nausherawan Burki on Wednesday visited various units of the Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Mardan to see the status of healthcare services being provided to patients.
Dr Burki, who is the architect of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Medical and Teaching Institution Act and is chairman of the Board of Governor (BoG) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s largest Lady Reading Hospital, visited the Outpatients Department, Accident and Emergency unit, Cardiology Ward and newly established Information Technology Centre.
He talked to the doctors about the available gear, staff, space and other related facilities. He felt the number of nursing staff ought to be increased.
