Forest Waterberry, an ecologically highly important tree species growing in regenerated sites, Nyungwe, Rwanda (WCS Rwanda/PA)
An area of forests larger than mainland France has regrown around the world since the turn of the new millennium, a new analysis suggests.
The mapping study from the Trillion Trees project found that nearly 59 million hectares (145 million acres) of forests have grown back worldwide since 2000.
This area of returning woodlands could store the equivalent of 5.9 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, more than then annual emissions of the US, highlighting the role they could play in tackling the climate crisis, the study said.

A new species of bird discovered in Brazil has a green head, yellow belly, and a high risk of going extinct soon
I would have been fine with just the green head and yellow belly, honestly.
An international team of ornithologists reports discovering a new species of bird in north-eastern Brazil. Sadly, the forests it calls home have been almost completely cut down.

The new species has been christened the Alagoas black-throated trogon (
Trogon muriciensis), and is part of the Trogonidae family of tropical birds. Comprising around 43 species and almost 110 subspecies, the trogons are some of the most colorful birds in the world at least, the males. They sport patterns of various colors including iridescent green, blue, violet, and purple, with bright red, orange, or yellow abdomens. The females have to make do with gray or brown feathers.
