Leon Joseph Cyr, a.k.a. Brother Leon, a religious Brother of the Sacred Heart, died Monday, July 19, 2021, at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pascoag, RI.
The second of three children of the late Anthem and Nelida Cyr, Leon was born on March 5, 1935, in Grand Isle, Maine. He was 86 years old.
Brother Leon entered the Institute of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Pomfret, CT, on September 6, 1952. He professed his first vows on August 24, 1955, in Pomfret, and his final vows on June 25, 1961, at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI. He received both a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master’s degree in the teaching of religion from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT, and an advanced certificate in Applied Theology from the University of California at Berkley, to assist him in serving the people of God throughout his 66-years as a Brother of the Sacred Heart.

(MURFREESBORO) The Heart of Tennessee lost longtime educator and youth mentor Joe Nunley on Friday (4/21/2021). He passed away at Alive Hospice Hospital after an extended illness.
Visitation will be Monday (4/26/2021) from 4:00 to 7:00PM at the Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Masks are required out of consideration for the health of family and guests. The funeral will be 11:00 o clock Tuesday (4/27/2021) morning at Murfreesboro s First Presbyterian Church (College at Spring St.), with burial at 2:30PM at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Viola, TN.

Joe served as an educator to thousands of Rutherford County students over the years, teaching General Science, Ecology and Biology at Oakland and Riverdale High School.
Murfreesboro City School Board Chair Butch Campbell said, “Joe Nunley..WOW !!! What an educator and amazing person. Joe was the rock for many young students as well as many colleagues. A much-respected educator and person, and I enjoyed always talking to him at MTSU ballgames and anywhere I saw him. An ICON of the teaching profession!”
