Among the more than one hundred films being shown and streamed through the San Diego Latino Film Festival is a seven-minute documentary about the beginning of Friendship Park.
The park, located at the southwestern corner of the United States, is inside California’s Border Field State Park. It was gifted from the federal government to the state of California nearly 50 years ago, on August 18, 1971, with the intention of creating a binational park commemorating the friendship between the United States and Mexico.
The short film, “Too Long Here,” directed by Emily Packer, shows archival footage from the day that then First Lady Pat Nixon flew to the mesa above the beach where strands of barbed wire fencing separated San Diego from Tijuana. She officially turned the land over to the state of California. ....
