Although many AI/AN youths reside in urban areas, there is limited research to inform the best prevention strategies to address the high rates of suicide among urban AI/AN young adults. Most people who die by suicide have contact with a primary care provider in the prior year, and many are seen in the month before their death. “Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment” (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice that co-locates behavioral health clinicians in primary care teams and substantially reduces suicide risk through immediate intervention by behavioral health clinicians. I think it s one of the best things I ve done in my entire nursing career and I ve been a nurse for over 40 years,” said Carolyn Montoya, PhD, RN, associate dean for clinical affairs in UNM College of Nursing. According to Montoya, more than 200 students have volunteered to help people get vaccinated during the vaccine rollout. This free event will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, April 17 at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Individuals who received their first dose at the March 20 event will be receiving their COVID-19 second dose booster vaccine at this event.
