WINCHESTER â Although most community events in 2020 were canceled due to COVID-19, First Night Winchester is not.
But the annual New Yearâs Eve celebration wonât have its traditional live performances, fireworks or the signature apple drop at midnight. Revelers instead can experience First Night entertainment inside their warm homes because First Night Winchester will be virtual today.
Organizers had hoped to hold a live event, but when Gov. Ralph Northam issued new COVID-related restrictions earlier this month, they had no choice but to pivot to an entirely online event.
Although many First Night celebrations across the country did cancel their events, Christine Germeyer, executive director of First Night Winchester, said local organizers were determined not to. And thereâs even a major benefit to hosting the event online â itâs free for all. There will be no fireworks this year.
He was 96 years old.
His health declined fairly quickly after his wife, Virginia, died on Oct. 10, said his daughter Katherine âKittyâ Zuckerman, one of the coupleâs six children.
âThey would have celebrated their 73rd anniversary on Jan. 10, so itâs not a surprise that she left a huge void in his heart,â she said.
As news of Zuckermanâs death spread, friends and family remembered not only his long political career â he served on City Council for more than a decade, then eight years as mayor â but his love of family and community.
âHe understood and looked out for everyone. He was just a people person. He loved everyone, and everyone loved Charlie,â said former Mayor Elizabeth âLizâ Minor, who served with Zuckerman on City Council beginning in 1980. âHe was a wonderful mayor for the city â and just a good man.â
