Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the vested quarters who tried to foil Bangladesh s independence have now failed. Those who tried to foil independence have now failed, she said.
The Prime Minister said this while virtually addressing a discussion marking the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from her official residence Ganobhaban.
Awami League organised the discussion at its central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue.
On January 10, 1972, Bangabandhu had returned to the independent and sovereign Bangladesh after over nine and a half months of captivity in a Pakistan jail. He was subjected to inhuman torture in the jail where he had been counting moments for the execution of his death sentence that was pronounced in a farcical trial.

999 helpline: 2 children among 5 workers rescued from brick kiln

Police today rescued five workers including two children who were confined in a brick kiln in Pirojpur s Indurkani after receiving a call for help through the helpline number 999.
After getting information through 999, police raided the brick kiln of Niaz Brick Industries at Kholpatua village yesterday and rescued five workers, said Officer-in-Charge of Indurkani Police Station Mohammad Humayun Kabir.
The rescued workers are Mafizur Rahman (8), Sagar Hossain (9) and Aliraj Hossain (18) of Shrifalkati village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira.
They were confined at Kholpatua village and forced to work against their will. Of them, Aliraj and Rashedul were kept in chains, the OC said.
