Local leaders recently referred to this stretch from North Danville nearly two-thirds of the way to the Campbell County line as a “hotel desert.” Soon, a 30,000-capacity amphitheater, the sprawl of a Caesar’s casino resort, the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, two boarding schools of national recognition and other prominent features will all lie between these two lodging options. It begs the question: Why is the seat of Pittsylvania County still without a hotel? “We actually lose events because of that,” said John Harris, executive director of the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham. “People make a decision on whether to have an event here or not based on hotel availability. I get plenty of events and I work plenty of deals, but I have lost events based on hotel availability.”
