It took a pandemic for many people to realize there's plenty of nature to explore within city limits. That's one reason why Parks Canada wants to expand its network of national urban parks, signing partnership agreements with three municipalities: Saskatoon, Halifax and Edmonton.

“Seventy-two per cent of the population lives in an urban environment. It’s important for us to be able to look at protecting biodiversity in the urban centres but it’s particularly important, if we expect Canadians to value nature that they have the opportunity to experience nature,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of environment and climate change and minister responsible for Parks Canada at a news conference Wednesday.
“We’re really excited. I think it’s a great opportunity to re-engage our entire region and work with the federal government to take a look at Meewasin and what’s out there for the future,” said Andrea Lafond, CEO of the Meewasin Valley Authority.

The connection between scientists and hobbyists, she said, has been positive in conservationist communities, leading to quicker species identification, better location tracking and more connectivity between interested groups.

“That’s really an interesting way for me to get information on some of these species just from folks walking around and noticing things and getting excited about them and wanting to post observations of them,” she said in an interview Tuesday.
