The council’s operations team leader Jennifer Braithwaite said after a third occasion, the offending properties had their recycling service suspended. Slipping contaminants in with recycling was also on the rise in Hamilton where the city council was looking to roll out the three warning system too, under the Waste Minimisation Bylaw.

Rubbish bag mixed in with glass recycling, food scraps, plastic containers and appliances have found their way into the Te Awamutu recycling centre. Braithwaite said it cost about $40,000 in January for Waipā council contractors to collect, sort and dispose of the contamination, an increase from $30,000 in late 2020 when it was flagged as a problem.
