A Newtown resident has been fined for fly-tipping near the town s police station. The resident, who has not been named, dumped black bags of domestic waste in and around a public litter bin on Park Lane in early January. The audacity of committing this criminal act in plain sight of the police station is staggering, Powys County Council s Waste and Recycling Service said. We want to remind everyone that public litter bins are to reduce litter and dog fouling and not for domestic rubbish! This sort of action creates additional work and costs for our hard working street cleaners, contractors and third sector partners and we would all rather this resource was invested in other initiatives.
Brecon Bus Station Toilets from Google Earth THE last two loos to be owned by Powys County Council (PCC) could close soon if someone can’t be found to take them over. Transferring the public conveniences at Brecon and Ystradgynlais bus interchanges for someone else to run could save Powys Council £43,000. The proposal is part of a package of cuts and savings of £980,000 that the Highways Transport and Recycling Service (HTR) need to find for 2021/22 This is part of an overall total of £11.828 millon that council services need to find in next year’s budget. Committee Chairman, Cllr Mathew Dorrance, (Brecon St John – Labour) said: “How does this fit in with the council’s local toilet strategy which was published in May 2019?”
Festive bin collections PROPOSALS to move from a three weekly to a four weekly collection of black bin rubbish have been dumped out of Powys Council’s 2021/22 budget. The idea was part of a package of cuts and savings proposals in the draft Powys County Council budget worth a total of £11.828 million. In total the cuts and savings expected from the Highways, Transport and Recycling Service total £980,000, and the change in collection would potentially have saved £50,000. But at a meeting of the economy, residents communities and governance scrutiny committee on Thursday, January 28, head of highways Matt Perry, explained research would be needed on what other waste could be taken out of the black bin for recycling before the authority could “consider the frequency” of collections.
