Where Your Author Considers Purchasing Something Less Practical
It’s been a few weeks since I sold the Golf Sportwagen back to the dealership from whence it came, and it’s still there if any of you would like a very clean Golf with no present water issues. Since then, I find myself peering out the kitchen window at the empty driveway space where the Golf used to reside. And it makes me have many thoughts,
impractical thoughts.
Given I don’t have dependents of human or animal nature, I’m thinking it might be time to own something a bit less practical than a wagon. Before the Golf wagon was a Subaru-cladded wagon, and before that was a Chevy Tahoe truck wagon. On the basis of being less practical, I’ve been considering some requirements and ideating on potential candidates. No spreadsheets in process yet, but soon.

Getting long in the tooth? Perhaps, but the latest Miata from Mazda is still as fun as always!
Miata definition: Miata is always the answer. Okay, not always, but this coincidental acronym has gone on to define the MX-5 s fanbase the past three decades. Want an affordable sportscar? Miata. Want to go racing? Miata. Economical commuter? Also Miata. Hey, this tester did average over 30 MPG during my time, and that s with some abuse. As cars become more and more advanced and with driver aids, getting back behind the wheel of a naturally aspirated, lightweight roadster with a six-speed manual served as a welcome reminder of how simple can be so engrossing.

Smaller and lighter than the NC, the ND chassis MX-5 is commonly compared with the original NA. In reality, the ND is more like an NB built with the most refined approach Mazda could muster. It s not as roly-poly playful as the original Miata, and in later models is actually quite a serious little sportscar.
Which is not to say it isn t incredibly good fun. Apart from the electric power steering being less talkative than in previous Miatas, the ND is lean, athletic, and poised. The suspension is slightly soft, which can teach a novice driver a great deal about weight transfer, and is very approachable. Add a few minor suspension tweaks, and it s a wee scalpel of a thing.
