Roski MFA student creates bilingual coronavirus community zine 'Héroes De La Comunidad'

Learning from a zine is both possible and enjoyable as proven by Roski MFA student Jose Sanchez’s latest piece, ‘Héroes De La Comunidad.’ (Photo courtesy of Gina Clyne.) When the world went virtual in 2020, Maria Galicia, education and programs coordinator for the USC Fisher Museum of Art, faced the challenge of immersing the community in artistic programs without visiting the museum in person. Turning to her community for inspiration, Galicia noticed that the majority of coronavirus resources were not effectively distributed or communicated to people of color, yet they were the most at-risk population to develop serious effects from the virus. Galicia saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between high-risk groups in Los Angeles and governmental health and safety communications.

FRO Fest provides a space for Black creatives to showcase their cinematic art

FRO Fest featured several films made by Black creatives, such as C. Craig Patterson’s “Alone Together.” (Alexis Francel | Daily Trojan) Films Reflecting Ourselves, otherwise known as FRO Fest, went live Feb. 17, showcasing Black writers, producers, directors and actors at USC. The event, which served as a platform for Black students’ stories to be shared and celebrated, was put together by the Center for Black Cultural Student Affairs, USC Fisher Museum of Art and the School of Cinematic Arts.  As a result of the coronavirus, the 2021 FRO Fest theme was “Creating Art During COVID.” A Zoom livestream was held to showcase creators’ work to those attending. The selected films showcased Black excellence and creativity while navigating the lifelong challenges of marginalization as well as the recent coronavirus pandemic.
