Millennium Challenge Compact Closes in Liberia

The US-sponsored Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) that restored electricity in post-conflict Liberia has finally closed after five years of operation in line with its mandate.
The compact was being administered by the Millennium Challenge Account established by the Legislature on October 23, 2015.  The MCC invested US$257 million in energy and road projects, which yielded the rebuilding of the Mount Coffee Dam that was destroyed during the civil war.
The Millennium Challenge Compact is a five-year project initiated by the US Government with support from other countries including Germany, Norway and the European Investment Bank, to help poor countries alleviate poverty. ....

President Weah Hails Millennium Challenge Compact’s Impact on Liberia

(Monrovia, Liberia):  The President of the Republic, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah, says is administration and the people of Liberia are satisfied with the impact of the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC). The Compact, implemented by the Millennium Challenge Account Liberia, has ended its work after jumpstarting the country’s electricity and road sectors.
President Weah acknowledged that Liberia was fortunate to have been among a very few countries that was eligible for a Millennium Challenge Compact.
 
The President said Liberia’s selection puts it in what he terms a “privileged group of beneficiary countries that have performed with distinction,” in terms of democratic rights and the control of corruption as reflected in the MCC country scorecard. ....

President Weah Vows to Ensure that Liberia Gets Another Compact; Promises to Take 'Due Care' of MCC's Projects in Liberia

PRESIDENT WEAH: “In order to ensure that Liberia’s performance on the MCC scorecard is realized, I have directed the MCC compact eligibility committee to work closely with the U.S. government and MCC to enable us to qualify for another compact in the future.”
MONROVIA – President George Weah has assured the American government that his government will work tirelessly to ensure the projects under the Millennium Challenge Compact are protected, used for the intended purpose and managed sustainably.
“As President of Liberia, I take this responsibility seriously. I hereby assure the American people that my government will prioritize the due care regard of the investment made under the compact. Liberia will not remain complacent with only one compact; we will make it our mission to strive for the second one,” President Weah said. ....

President Weah, after acknowledging the donors who made the MCC Compact possible, including the American people, the Governments of Norway and Germany, and the European Investment Bank, also looked toward future possibilities: “As President of Liberia, I take this responsibility seriously.  I hereby assure the American people that my government will prioritize … the investment made under the Compact.  Liberia will not remain complacent with only one Compact; we will make it our mission to strive for the second one.”
