Mother tried to relinquish custody of children before 6-year-old son s killing

View Comments A Middletown mother accused of killing her 6-year-old son said she had previously tried to relinquish parental rights over her children before her son s death, according to court documents.  During an evaluation to determine if she was competent to stand trial, conducted over two sessions in April with court-appointed psychologist Carla Dreyer, Gosney said she faced a number of barriers in trying to give up custody of her three children.  Gosney, 29, is accused of hog-tying her children and attempting to abandon them Feb. 26 in a Preble County park where they had taken family trips in the past. Police said 6-year-old James Hutchinson grabbed the door handle of the van as Gosney tried to speed away. He fell, suffered head trauma and died, officials reported.

Are Cincinnati children s abuse cases going unnoticed amid pandemic?

When Cincinnati police asked for help in their search for Nylo Lattimore in December, there was no case for the 3-year-old in Hamilton County s Department of Job and Family Services. That s where people should call if they suspect abuse or neglect of a child. Those who work in the department saw a drop in calls from the public about children and their wellbeing during the coronavirus pandemic. The same happened throughout Ohio and the nation. Calls dropped, but experts say abuse likely hasn t. After he went missing, a photo of Nylo in a green, army print sweatsuit circulated on social media while police and the community searched for the toddler. Weeks passed with no sign of Nylo, and the rescue mission turned into a dive search.
