Former Michigan Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield has been hired as CEO of the economic development nonprofit Southwest Michigan First, the organization announced on Thursday, Feb. 11. At the Kalamazoo City Commission meeting on Monday, Feb. 15, Commissioner Erin Knott made the motion that the city withdraw from Southwest Michigan First’s Council of 100, which includes other entities such as Western Michigan University, Bronson HealthCare, Millennium Restaurant Group, Greenleaf Trust, Stryker, and others, according to the Southwest Michigan First web site.

Southwest Michigan First lost financial support from the city after hiring Lee Chatfield, former Michigan Speaker of the House, as CEO. On Tuesday, the organization says it is updating the official handbook to clearly prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation in the hiring process. Southwest Michigan First says that has always been its practice, but felt the official change was needed after Monday s commission meeting.

(Journal file photo) MARQUETTE The 62nd annual Art on the Rocks Fine Art Show is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 24 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 25 at Mattson Lower Harbor Park after the 2020 show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was announced on its website at marquetteontherocks.com that applications will remain open through March 31. “We are currently planning for business as usual, though we will continue to keep a close eye on the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination efforts over the next few months to ensure that we are able to put together a safe event that abides by all local, state and national guidelines,” wrote Tristan Luoma, Art on the Rocks director.
