COVID-19 aid, confidentiality agreements, guns and LGBT rights: The week in Michigan politics

The push and pull over COVID-19 aid continues in Lansing, with the Legislature approving $4.2 billion in pandemic relief, but with strings attached that would limit the governor’s executive authority.
Meanwhile, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this week faced questions about confidentiality clauses included in separation agreements with multiple state workers, including former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon, who resigned abruptly in January
The questions came as she announced easing building capacity limits for businesses and raising the number of people who can legally gather in Michigan.

GOVERNOR WHITMER S 2021 STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS
Good evening.
Last year, I gave my second State of the State address in the House Chamber here in the capitol.
Like much of the last year, this State of the State is different, because it has to be. Tonight, it’s just me and a few people in my Capitol office.
And while it’s different, it s an opportunity to speak directly to you the people of Michigan about the past year, and our priorities in 2021.
At the risk of losing you in the first minutes of this speech, I’m going to use a Latin phrase: Annus horribilis: a year of horribles. Before I tell you more, take comfort in knowing that tough years like 2020, our annus horribilis, are usually followed by great years – and yes, there’s Latin a phrase for that too: annus mirabilis.

by Alan Stamm A partial gun-safety step for the state Capitol is adopted five days after a rampage at the U.S. Capitol stunned the world. The Michigan State Capitol Commission voted unanimously Monday to ban the open carry of firearms at the state Capitol . ahead of anticipated protests next week, The Detroit News reports from Lansing. The vote comes after years of consideration of a potential ban on gun possession in the Michigan Capitol, a debate that ratcheted up last spring during armed protests of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer s stay-home order. During an April 30 protest, dozens of people some of whom were armed went inside the Capitol, demanded entry to the House floor and stood with firearms in the Senate gallery above lawmakers while they were in session.
