Missouri Bicentennial Minutes: Missouri's Courts - Law and Entertainment at Statehood

Welcome to the Missouri Bicentennial Minute from the State Historical Society of Missouri. Courts and their actions structured life in Missouri at statehood, as well as providing interest and entertainment. Missouri’s first constitution altered the organization of the court system. The Supreme Court, comprised of three judges, held two sessions annually in up to four convenient districts. It heard causes originating in the district where it sat. Circuit courts, the trail courts, had jurisdiction over inferior tribunals, involving most criminal and civil cases. The Constitution provided division of the state into convenient districts, each with an appointed judge. Judges rode a circuit and held court in county seats within their district. Most early cases involved trespass or debt.

Missouri Bicentennial Minutes: Missouri's Economy at Statehood - The Panic of 1819

Welcome to the Missouri Bicentennial Minute from the State Historical Society of Missouri. The United States was amid the Panic of 1819 at the time of Missouri Statehood. This downturn, considered the first U. S. economic depression, introduced the U. S. into the “boom and bust” cycles experienced by modern economies and it marked the transition of the country toward an economy independent of its colonial ties to Europe. A post-War of 1812 economic boom that fueled overconfidence preceded the downturn. Causes of the panic included fluctuations in European markets, obstruction by private banks to federal regulations, and failure by lenders and borrowers to realize what made credit expansion possible. Missouri had suffered as a result of rampant speculation in public land. The federal government owned land after the Louisiana Purchase, and intended to expeditiously sell it to settlers and private interests. Land laws allowed credit sales at this time, and speculation ran rampant.

Missouri Bicentennial Minutes: What Working Class Missourians Wore in 1821

Welcome to the Missouri Bicentennial Minute from the State Historical Society of Missouri. Working class Missourians wore clothing for special occasions that mirrored the clothing worn by the upper classes. However, average people might have only one set of good clothes, if that, and only one or two sets of clothes in total. Fabrics were inexpensive cotton, linen, or wool the latter two often grown, spun, woven, and sewn on their own farm. Except for inexpensive purchased cotton, fabrics were home-dyed. Women wore plainer, high-waisted dresses in the Regency style, but usually wore a straw or cloth bonnet when working outside or in social settings. A shawl or cloak kept out the chill. Slippers completed the outfit.
