Delaware teens get COVID-19 vaccinated in northeast Wilmington

View Comments Health and community leaders gathered Sunday to help vaccinate newly eligible teenagers at The Warehouse teen center in an effort to combat vaccine hesitancy and close vaccine disparities in Black and brown communities.  The event aimed to vaccinate some of Delaware s first eligible teens after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on May 10 authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use in people 12 to 15 years old. Teenagers and parents expressed their relief and gratitude about receiving the vaccine and encouraged others to sign up for the shots. While she was initially hesitant to get the vaccine, 17-year-old Anaya Patterson was persuaded to do so after hearing from her vaccinated friends and family who remained healthy after their shots. Patterson, a board chair at The Warehouse, hoped to do the same and set an example for other teens by getting vaccinated at the event.

Delaware COVID-19 capacity restrictions to end in late May

Delaware News Journal Delaware on Tuesday announced sweeping changes to its COVID-19 restrictions, representing the state s most significant move toward reopening its economy since the start of the pandemic more than 13 months ago. The changes take effect May 21. Capacity restrictions at Delaware restaurants, stores, places of worship and other businesses will be lifted, enabling them to host as many people as they can fit under the state s social distancing requirement. The state is moving its social distancing requirement from 6 feet to 3 feet.  Events with over 250 people – indoors or outdoors – will require plan approval from the Division of Public Health. Gov. John Carney said his primary reasons for lifting restrictions are Delaware s dropping case rates and hospitalization totals and the state s increasing vaccination numbers. Warmer weather in the coming weeks will also encourage more outdoor activities and limit the virus s spread, he said.
