Everybody loves a good Shark Week. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that Shark Week could nay,
should become a national holiday (just ask Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer). But the whole beauty of Shark Week is the fact that we all get to watch the titular, toothy fish from the comfort and safety of our couches. We don’t actually need to swim out into the salty abyss and tempt fate next to a bunch of apex predators in their literal and figurative element.

What started as a personal passion is helping researchers at Cal State Long Beach’s renowned Shark Lab, where they have been tracking sharks, particularly the Great Whites, for a few years.

As people continue to ramp up the monitoring of shorelines with drones, a new view of the ocean-land nexus continues to come into focus. Literally. In recent videos from Australia, for example, a drone pilot captured the majesty of a fever of sea rays from above. And now, in Malibu, California, somebody’s recorded aerial footage of something equally sublime: baby great white sharks. Which come so close to people the video’s nerve-wracking to watch.
Carlos G., a.k.a. The Malibu Artist, captured the above video. In his YouTube bio, Carlos says he’s a professional photographer and FAA certified drone pilot. And the photographer does indeed look like a master of the drone arts. (Also, recording the footage in 4K is definitely the mark of a pro.)

Carlos Gauna, AKA the Malibu Artist, has got this drone thing on lock. Specifically getting drone footage of great white sharks as they interact with humans. Here, he gives us ten hypnotic minutes of drone footy and gives us a little insight with an easy-listening voice over.
Carlos follows shark migrations throughout the year so he knows their patterns well. As he says in the video, it’s spring again, and animals and sea life are starting to become more visible in Southern California waters as the sea warms.
