Lawmakers urge speaker to help empower parliament

ISLAMABAD:
Opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly on Monday stressed the need for national cohesion to face challenges emanating from Afghanistan and called for rule of law and free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
Taking part in the debate on the presidential address, senior politicians from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and others urged Speaker Asad Qaiser to play his part in empowering parliament, which they described as the most powerful institution in the country.
From the government’s side, Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood and National Assembly Member (MNA) Alia Hamza, criticised the opposition for doing politics on vital national issues, such as examinations for secondary and higher secondary classes amid ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday accepted for hearing a petition by the ruling PTI seeking disqualification of PPP Senator-elect Yousuf Raza Gilani, while directing that the names of two PTI lawmakers also be included as respondents.
The ECP decided to issue notices to the former prime minister and his son Ali Haider Gilani over a video in which Ali was seen telling PTI MNAs how to make a vote in the Senate election invalid by over-writing and ticking in front of the names of all candidates on the ballot paper and purportedly offered money and development funds.
Debate on electricity tariff hike deferred again amid opposition protest

The National Assembly on Monday passed three bills amid noisy protests from opposition lawmakers but an adjournment motion for a debate on electricity tariff hike was postponed again despite being on the day’s agenda.
The session began with Speaker Asad Qaiser in the chair. During the Question Hour, the house was informed that the total debt of Pakistan was Rs21,400 billion in 2016-17 which increased to Rs36,900 billion by September 2020.
After the Question Hour, the legislative process began, but the opposition members rose from their seats and started raising slogans. Amid the noisy, Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Babar Awan introduced the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority Bill 2020 and the Public Private Partnership Authority Bill 2020, while Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Zain Qureshi tabled the Pakistan One-Window Bill 2020.

Summons president, vice president on Feb 4; rejects report on MDCAT issue

The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination on Tuesday expressed displeasure over the non-professional attitude of Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) for submitting an “unsatisfactory reply” on the MDCAT issue.
The committee meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Khalid Hussain Magsi, said that the report submitted by the PMC was not satisfactory and showed its displeasure over the absence of its President Prof Arshad Taqi and Vice President Ali Raza, saying that it shows lack of importance towards the parliamentary business.
